Rev. Doty was born and grew up Marysville, Washington, near Seattle, in a Lutheran family with first and second generation connections to Norway. Faith and the church have always been a major part of her life from the beginning. She had ministry in mind as a possible career when she attended St. Olaf College in Minnesota, but being told that ministers were men, she transferred to the University of Washington and completed degrees in education and math. She taught for two years, completed the requirements for her MA in education, then moved to the DC area where she became a mathematician at NSA and entered a data processing and systems analysis internship program. From there she moved to the MITRE Corporation, completed an MA in Public Administration, and was managing a group of approximately 20 engineers at NASA Goddard as a department head when she felt renewal of her call to ministry. She left MITRE, and entered Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, VA, an Episcopal seminary which she notes had several capable and dedicated Presbyterians among its faculty.

Rev. Doty served Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church for two years while a seminarian. After receiving her Master of Divinity, she accepted a call to Melnik Presbyterian Church near Green Bay, Wisconsin, in Winnebago Presbytery and was ordained in her home congregation of Christian Community Presbyterian Church (CCPC), Bowie, MD on her 45th birthday in 1988. She served Melnik for 14 years when her husband’s health brought them back to the DC area. She and er husband John Keenan were regular participants in the life of Northminster Presbyterian Church and she accepted the role of pastoral associate in that congregation. Following her husband’s death in 2004, she served a brief interim role at CCPC in Bowie, then served for over 3 years as temporary stated supply of the English Ministry of the Taiwanese Presbyterian Church in Wheaton, until her retirement this past summer.

Rev. Doty has served many roles in the church at Presbytery and Synod levels. She served one term as moderator of Winnebago Presbytery, and served on budget, education, and ecumenical relations committees ion the Synod of Lakes and Prairies. One of the unique factors of her ministry is that she ahs always been a tentmaker, earning her primary income through her continuing role in computer security with government and corporate sectors. She feels this gives her a unique real world perspective on living our faith in the world. She has completed classes and seminars in prayer and various faith topics with the Shalem Insititute (Rockville, MD), Benedictine Monastary (Middleton, WI), and in many Presbytery sponsored opportunities.
